Wolfe’s No. 23 Jay Motorsports Formula Enterprises machine popped off a fast lap of 1:25.162 (107.371 mph) late in the 20-minute session to top a back and forth battle between Patrick Gallagher and Scott Rettich for the first starting spot.
The 17-year-old credited patience to the fast lap at the 2.54-mile circuit, which left him just 0.011-second ahead of his teammate, Gallagher. Gallagher’s No. 00 Jay Motorsports/CTL Engineering Formula Enterprises machine posted a time of 1:25.173 (107.358 mph) to start on the outside of row one.
“The car wasn’t real good at the beginning, but it came in awesome toward the end of the [session],” Wolfe said. “Jay worked on this car forever, and it worked out.
“We didn’t come in, but the car built up and got better toward the session. I thought at the end it was capable of doing that.”
Wolfe knows that Sunday’s races won’t be easy, as Rettich has captured the first eight races of the season.
“We’re real excited about tomorrow, and hopefully we can win it,” said a confident Wolfe.
Rettich, the championship leader, will start third after a time of 1:25.517 (106.926 mph) in the No. 17 PDI Communications Systems Formula Enterprises.
Mark Eaton earned a second row starting spot in his No. 92 Rent This Car Formula Enterprises alongside Rettich, posting the fourth-fastest qualifying time in 1:25.678 (106.725 mph). Matt Schneider placed the third Jay Motorsports machine in the top five with a qualifying time of 1:26.701 (105.466 mph) in the No. 31 Jay Motorsports Formula Enterprises.
The first of two 20-lap Pro Formula Enterprises Series races on Sunday is scheduled to begin at approximate 8:40 a.m. Race one will also set the grid for Sunday afternoon’s finale, based on fast lap during the morning race.
